Many Muslims across India are rejecting the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 not because they are against the concept of Waqf, but because they believe the new amendments:
Undermine the Spirit of Waqf in Islam
Waqf in Islam is meant to be:
(a) Voluntary
(b) Charitable
(c) Transparent
The 2025 Amendment gives government-backed Waqf Boards enormous power to take over land or property in the name of Waqf, which goes against the principle of free will and donation. Many Muslims believe this misuse is hurting the image of Islamic charity.
Risk of Corruption & Misuse
(a) Several Waqf Boards have been accused of land scams, illegal leasing, and poor management.
(b) The Amendment strengthens the boards without fixing these internal issues.
(c) Muslims fear that this law will benefit corrupt officials, not the community or the poor.
Lack of Community Involvement
(a) Decisions about Waqf properties are being made by bureaucrats, not local Muslims or religious scholars.
(b) The Amendment does not ensure consultation with the community or transparency in decisions.
(c) Many Muslims see this as a top-down imposition, not a grassroots reform.
No Audit, No Accountability
(a) Muslims are concerned that the Bill does not include strict auditing or financial accountability.
(b) Without transparency, donated lands and funds meant for schools, hospitals, and orphans can be misused.
Selective Targeting and Political Motive
Some Muslims believe the Amendment is being used to:
(a) Politically control Muslim institutions
(b) Seize valuable urban land under the cover of Waqf
(c) Divide the Muslim vote or create fear
There is a growing demand that all religious endowments (Hindu, Sikh, Christian) be treated under a uniform law, not just Waqf.
Demand for Reform, Not Centralization
Muslims are not against reform, but they want:
(a) Transparency
(b) Community control
(c) Fair representation of scholars
(d) Protection of donors’ intent
Instead of empowering central boards, Muslims want localized, accountable, and community-led reforms. We reject the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 because it does not represent the Islamic values of Waqf, lacks accountability, enables corruption, and politicizes a religious institution. We seek reform, not exploitation.
