In recent times, Islam has often been unfairly linked with violence or terrorism due to the actions of a misguided few. As Muslims, it is our duty to clarify this misconception with firm evidence from our sacred sources — the Qur’an and the Sunnah (Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ).
Let us explore how Islam stands completely against terrorism, violence, and the killing of innocents.
1. What Does the Qur'an Say About Killing the Innocent?
This powerful verse underlines the sacred value of every human life. Unjust killing is equated with murdering all of humanity. How can terrorism, which thrives on killing innocents, ever be justified in light of this verse?➤ Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:32):
"Whoever kills a soul—unless for a soul or for corruption (done) in the land—it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one, it is as if he had saved mankind entirely."
Killing without just cause is a major sin. The only acceptable reasons involve lawful justice through a fair legal system — not personal vengeance, political ideology, or religious misinterpretation.➤ Surah Al-Isra (17:33):
"And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden, except by right."
2. What Did the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Say About Violence and Terrorism?
A true Muslim is not someone who spreads harm or fear. This hadith gives a direct description of who a Muslim is — peaceful, just, and respectful of others' safety.➤ Hadith – Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 10:
"A Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hands people are safe."
This statement from the Prophet ﷺ came during a military campaign — showing that even in war, Islam strictly prohibits harming non-combatants.➤ Hadith – Sunan Abu Dawood, 2669:
"Do not kill women, children, or the elderly or sick people."
The Prophet ﷺ even protected the lives and rights of non-Muslims living under Muslim rule. What then can be said about terrorism that targets innocent civilians, regardless of their faith?➤ Hadith – Musnad Ahmad:
"He who harms a non-Muslim citizen (dhimmi), I am his opponent (on the Day of Judgment)."
Terrorism Is Not Jihad
Some extremists misuse the term "jihad" to justify terrorism. This is a gross distortion. Jihad in Islam means struggle — mostly spiritual, and when physical, it must follow strict ethical rules.
