Meaning: The Crouching | Has 37 Verses | Revealed In: Mecca (Makki Surah)

1. حم
Ḥā Meem.
The revelation of the Book is from Allah—the Almighty, the All-Wise.
Indeed, in the heavens and the earth are signs for the believers.
And in your creation, and in whatever living creatures He dispersed, are signs for people who have certainty.
And in the alternation of night and day, and in the provision (rain) that Allah sends down from the sky, giving life to the earth after its death, and in the shifting of the winds—are signs for people who use reason.
These are the verses of Allah, which We recite to you in truth. So in what statement after Allah and His signs will they believe?
Woe to every sinful liar,
Who hears the verses of Allah recited to him, then persists arrogantly as if he had not heard them—so give him glad tidings of a painful punishment.
And when he learns something of Our verses, he takes them in mockery. For such people, there will be a humiliating punishment.
Beyond them is Hell. What they have earned will not benefit them, nor will the protectors they took besides Allah. For them is a terrible punishment.
This \[Qur’an] is guidance. But those who disbelieve in the signs of their Lord will have a punishment of a painful scourge.
It is Allah who subjected the sea for you so that ships may sail upon it by His command, and so that you may seek His bounty—and perhaps you will be thankful.
And He has subjected to you all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth—it is all from Him. Indeed in that are signs for people who reflect.
Tell those who believe to forgive those who do not expect the days of Allah \[i.e., His judgment], so that He may recompense a people for what they have earned.
Whoever does a righteous deed, it is for \[the benefit of] his own soul; and whoever does evil, it will be against it. Then to your Lord you will \[all] be returned.
We certainly gave the Children of Israel the Scripture, the authority to judge, and prophethood. We provided them with good things and favored them above \[others of] their time.
And We gave them clear proofs in \[religious] matters. They did not differ except after knowledge had come to them—out of envy among themselves. Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.
Then We put you \[O Prophet] on a clear way of the religion; so follow it, and do not follow the desires of those who do not know.
Indeed, they will never protect you against Allah in the least. And surely the wrongdoers are allies of one another. But Allah is the Ally of the righteous.
This \[Qur’an] is a means of insight for mankind, and guidance and mercy for people who are certain in faith.
Or do those who commit evil deeds think that We will make them equal—in life and death—to those who believe and do righteous deeds? Evil is the judgment they make!
Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth, so that every soul may be repaid for what it has earned, and none will be wronged.
Have you seen the one who takes his desires as his god, and Allah left him astray despite knowledge, sealing his hearing and his heart and placing a veil over his sight? Who then can guide him after Allah? Will you not then be mindful?
They say, “There is nothing beyond our worldly life: we die, we live, and nothing destroys us but time.” But they have no knowledge of that—they only speculate.
And when Our clear verses are recited to them, their only argument is that they say, “Bring back our forefathers if what you say is true!”
Say: “It is Allah who gives you life, then causes you to die, then gathers you on the Day of Resurrection—about which there is no doubt. But most people do not know.”
To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And on the Day the Hour arises, that Day the falsifiers will lose.
You will see every nation kneeling. Every nation will be called to its record. “This Day you will be repaid for what you used to do.”
This is Our record, which speaks about you in truth. Indeed, We were recording what you used to do.
So as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them into His mercy. That is the clear success.
But as for those who disbelieved: “Were not My verses recited to you? But you were arrogant and became a sinful people.”
And when it was said, “Indeed, Allah’s promise is true, and the Hour—there is no doubt about it,” you said, “We do not know what the Hour is. We only speculate, and we are not convinced.”
And the evil of what they did will appear to them, and they will be overwhelmed by what they used to ridicule.
It will be said: “This Day We will forget you as you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours. Your refuge is the Fire, and you will have no helpers.”
That is because you took Allah’s revelations in mockery, and the worldly life deluded you.” So this Day they will not be taken out of it, nor will they be allowed to repent.
So all praise is due to Allah—Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, and Lord of all the worlds.
To Him belongs all greatness in the heavens and the earth. And He is the Almighty, the All-Wise.
