Chapter 56: Surah Al-Waqi'ah (سورة الواقعة)
Meaning: The Inevitable | Has 96 Verses | Revealed In: Mecca (Makki Surah)
1. إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ
When the Inevitable Event befalls—
2. لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌۭ
There is no denying its occurrence.
3. خَافِضَةٌۭ رَّافِعَةٌۭ
It will bring down some and raise others.
4. إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّۭا
When the earth is shaken violently,
5. وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّۭا
And the mountains are crushed to powder,
6. فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءًۭ مُّنبَثًّۭا
So they become scattered dust.
7. وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٟجًۭا ثَلَـٰثَةًۭ
And you will become three categories:
8. فَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ
So the people of the Right—what are the people of the Right?
9. وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ
And the people of the Left—what are the people of the Left?
10. وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ
And the foremost (in faith) will be the foremost.
11. أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ
They are the ones nearest to Allah.
12. فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
In Gardens of Bliss.
13. ثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
A multitude from the early generations,
14. وَقَلِيلٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ
And a few from the later ones.
15. عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍۢ مَّوْضُونَةٍۢ
On adorned thrones,
16. مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَـٰبِلِينَ
Reclining on them, facing each other.
17. يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌۭ مُّخَلَّدُونَ
They will be served by immortal youth,
18. بِأَكْوَابٍۢ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍۢ مِّن مَّعِينٍۢ
With cups, pitchers, and a drink from a flowing spring.
19. لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ
Never to be affected with headache from it, nor intoxicated.
20. وَفَـٰكِهَةٍۢ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ
And fruits of their choice,
21. وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍۢ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ
And the meat of birds that they desire.
22. وَحُورٌ عِينٌۭ
And fair maidens with large, beautiful eyes,
23. كَأَمْثَـٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ
Like hidden pearls.
24. جَزَآءًۭ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
As a reward for what they used to do.
25. لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًۭا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا
They will hear no idle or sinful talk therein,
26. إِلَّا قِيلًۭا سَلَـٰمًۭا سَلَـٰمًۭا
Only greetings of peace, peace.
27. وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ
And those on the Right—what are those on the Right?
28. فِى سِدْرٍۢ مَّخْضُودٍۢ
They will be among thornless lote trees,
29. وَطَلْحٍۢ مَّنضُودٍۢ
And clustered banana trees,
30. وَظِلٍّۢ مَّمْدُودٍۢ
And extended shade,
31. وَمَآءٍۢ مَّسْكُوبٍۢ
And flowing water,
32. وَفَـٰكِهَةٍۢ كَثِيرَةٍۢ
And abundant fruit,
33. لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍۢ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍۢ
Never ending and never forbidden,
34. وَفُرُشٍۢ مَّرْفُوعَةٍۢ
And elevated couches.
35. إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَـٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءًۭ
Indeed, We have created the (maidens) in a special creation,
36. فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًۭا
And made them virgins,
37. عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًۭا
Devoted and of equal age,
38. لِّأَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ
For those on the Right.
39. ثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
A multitude from earlier generations,
40. وَثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ
And a multitude from later generations.
41. وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ
And those on the Left—what are those on the Left?
42. فِى سَمُومٍۢ وَحَمِيمٍۢ
They will be amid scorching wind and boiling water,
43. وَظِلٍّۢ مِّن يَحْمُومٍۢ
And a shade of black smoke,
44. لَّا بَارِدٍۢ وَلَا كَرِيمٍۢ
Neither cool nor pleasant.
45. إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٟلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ
Indeed, before that, they lived in luxury.
46. وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
And they persisted in the great sin.
47. وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًۭا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ
And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we to be resurrected?
48. أَوَ ءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ
Even our forefathers?"
49. قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ
Say, "Indeed, the former and the later peoples
50. لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَـٰتِ يَوْمٍۢ مَّعْلُومٍۢ
Will all be gathered for the appointed Day.
51. ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ
Then indeed, you, O those astray who deny,
52. لَـَٔاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍۢ مِّن زَقُّومٍۢ
Will be eating from the tree of Zaqqoom
53. فَمَالِـِٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ
And filling your bellies with it,
54. فَشَـٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ
And drinking boiling water on top of it,
55. فَشَـٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ
And drinking as the thirsty camels drink.
56. هَـٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ
This will be their hospitality on the Day of Judgment.
57. نَّحْنُ خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ
We created you—so why do you not believe?
58. أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ
Have you seen that (fluid) you emit?
59. ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَ
Is it you who create it, or are We the Creator?
60. نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ
We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone
61. عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَـٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
In replacing you with others like yourselves and forming you in ways you do not know.
62. وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
And you certainly knew the first creation, so why do you not take heed?
63. أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ
Have you seen what you plant?
64. ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ
Is it you who make it grow, or are We the Grower?
65. لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ حُطَٰمًۭا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ
If We willed, We could make it dry debris, and you would remain in wonder,
66. إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ
(Saying,) "We have surely suffered a loss,
67. بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ"
Rather, we are deprived!"
68. أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ
Have you seen the water you drink?
69. ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ
Is it you who sent it down from the clouds, or are We the Sender?
70. لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَـٰهُ أُجَاجًۭا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ
If We willed, We could have made it bitter—so why are you not grateful?
71. أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ
Have you seen the fire you kindle?
72. ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ
Did you produce its tree, or are We the Producer?
73. نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَـٰهَا تَذْكِرَةًۭ وَمَتَـٰعًۭا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ
We made it a reminder and provision for the travelers.
74. فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
So glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
75. فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ
But no! I swear by the positions of the stars—
76. وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌۭ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ
And indeed, it is a great oath—if you only knew—
77. إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌۭ كَرِيمٌۭ
Indeed, it is a noble Qur’an,
78. فِى كِتَـٰبٍۢ مَّكْنُونٍۢ
In a protected Book,
79. لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ
None touch it except the purified.
80. تَنزِيلٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
A revelation from the Lord of the worlds.
81. أَفَبِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ
Then is it to this statement that you are indifferent
82. وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ
And you make your provision that you deny (the truth)?
83. فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ
Then why, when the soul reaches the throat,
84. وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍۢ تَنظُرُونَ
While you are looking on—
85. وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ
And We are nearer to him than you, but you do not see—
86. فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ
Then why do you not intervene if you are not to be recompensed?
87. تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ
Bring it (the soul) back, if you are truthful.
88. فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ
So if the deceased was of the ones brought near (to Allah)—
89. فَرَوْحٌۭ وَرَيْحَانٌۭ وَجَنَّةُ نَعِيمٍۢ
Then (for him is) rest, and bounty, and a Garden of Delight.
90. وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ
And if he was of those on the Right,
91. فَسَلَـٰمٌۭ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ
Then (he will be told), “Peace be upon you from those on the Right.”
92. وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ
But if he was of the deniers, the astray,
93. فَنُزُلٌۭ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍۢ
Then his welcome will be scalding water,
94. وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ
And burning in Hellfire.
95. إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ
Indeed, this is the certain truth.
96. فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
So glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great.

76. وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌۭ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ
And indeed, it is a great oath—if you only knew—
77. إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌۭ كَرِيمٌۭ
Indeed, it is a noble Qur’an,
78. فِى كِتَـٰبٍۢ مَّكْنُونٍۢ
In a protected Book,
79. لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ
None touch it except the purified.
80. تَنزِيلٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
A revelation from the Lord of the worlds.
81. أَفَبِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ
Then is it to this statement that you are indifferent
82. وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ
And you make your provision that you deny (the truth)?
83. فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ
Then why, when the soul reaches the throat,
84. وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍۢ تَنظُرُونَ
While you are looking on—
85. وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ
And We are nearer to him than you, but you do not see—
86. فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ
Then why do you not intervene if you are not to be recompensed?
87. تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ
Bring it (the soul) back, if you are truthful.
88. فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ
So if the deceased was of the ones brought near (to Allah)—
89. فَرَوْحٌۭ وَرَيْحَانٌۭ وَجَنَّةُ نَعِيمٍۢ
Then (for him is) rest, and bounty, and a Garden of Delight.
90. وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ
And if he was of those on the Right,
91. فَسَلَـٰمٌۭ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ
Then (he will be told), “Peace be upon you from those on the Right.”
92. وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ
But if he was of the deniers, the astray,
93. فَنُزُلٌۭ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍۢ
Then his welcome will be scalding water,
94. وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ
And burning in Hellfire.
95. إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ
Indeed, this is the certain truth.
96. فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
So glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
