Chapter 44: Ad-Dukhan (The Smoke)

Chapter 44: Surah Ad-Dukhan (سورة الدخان)
Meaning: The Smoke | Has 59 Verses | Revealed In: Mecca (Makki Surah)
1. حم
Ḥā Meem.
2. وَٱلْكِتَـٰبِ ٱلْمُبِينِ
By the clear Book,
3. إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ فِى لَيْلَةٍۢ مُّبَـٰرَكَةٍ ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُنذِرِينَ
Indeed, We sent it down on a blessed night—for We always warn \[against evil].
4. فِيهَا يُفْرَقُ كُلُّ أَمْرٍۢ حَكِيمٍ
On that night every matter of wisdom is ordained,
5. أَمْرًۭا مِّنْ عِندِنَآ ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُرْسِلِينَ
By a command from Us. Surely, We have always been sending \[messengers].
6. رَحْمَةًۭ مِّن رَّبِّكَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ
As a mercy from your Lord—He is indeed the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
7. رَبِّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ ۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِينَ
Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them—if only you had sure faith!
8. لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ ۖ رَبُّكُمْ وَرَبُّ ءَابَآئِكُمُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
There is no god but Him. He gives life and causes death—your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers.
9. بَلْ هُمْ فِى شَكٍّۢ يَلْعَبُونَ
Yet they are in doubt, amusing themselves.
10. فَٱرْتَقِبْ يَوْمَ تَأْتِى ٱلسَّمَآءُ بِدُخَانٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ
So watch for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke,
11. يَغْشَى ٱلنَّاسَ ۖ هَـٰذَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌۭ
Enveloping the people. This will be a painful torment.
12. رَبَّنَا ٱكْشِفْ عَنَّا ٱلْعَذَابَ إِنَّا مُؤْمِنُونَ
[They will cry,] “Our Lord! Remove this torment from us, we truly are believers!”
13. أَنَّىٰ لَهُمُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ وَقَدْ جَآءَهُمْ رَسُولٌۭ مُّبِينٌۭ
But how will they be reminded \[now], when a clear messenger had already come to them?
14. ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوْا۟ عَنْهُ وَقَالُوا۟ مُعَلَّمٌۭ مَّجْنُونٌ
Then they turned away from him, saying, “He is well-taught, but insane!”
15. إِنَّا كَاشِفُوا۟ ٱلْعَذَابِ قَلِيلًا ۚ إِنَّكُمْ عَآئِدُونَ
Indeed, We will remove the torment for a while, but you will surely revert \[to disbelief].
16. يَوْمَ نَبْطِشُ ٱلْبَطْشَةَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ إِنَّا مُنتَقِمُونَ
On the Day We will seize with a mighty grasp—surely We will exact retribution.
17. وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَجَآءَهُمْ رَسُولٌۭ كَرِيمٌ
And indeed We tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and a noble messenger came to them,
18. أَنْ أَدُّوٓا۟ إِلَىَّ عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّى لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
[Saying,] “Hand over to me the servants of Allah. Surely, I am a trustworthy messenger to you.”
19. وَأَن لَّا تَعْلُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّىٓ ءَاتِيكُم بِسُلْطَـٰنٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ
“And do not exalt yourselves above Allah. Indeed, I come to you with clear authority.”
20. وَإِنِّى عُذْتُ بِرَبِّى وَرَبِّكُمْ أَن تَرْجُمُونِ
“And indeed, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me.”
21. وَإِن لَّمْ تُؤْمِنُوا۟ لِى فَٱعْتَزِلُونِ
“But if you do not believe me, then keep away from me.”
22. فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ قَوْمٌۭ مُّجْرِمُونَ
Then he called on his Lord, “These are certainly a sinful people.”
23. فَأَسْرِ بِعِبَادِى لَيْلًا إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ
[Allah said,] “Travel with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued.”
24. وَٱتْرُكِ ٱلْبَحْرَ رَهْوًا ۖ إِنَّهُمْ جُندٌۭ مُّغْرَقُونَ
“And leave the sea parted. Surely, they are an army to be drowned.”
25. كَمْ تَرَكُوا۟ مِن جَنَّـٰتٍۢ وَعُيُونٍۢ
How many gardens and springs did they leave behind,
26. وَزُرُوعٍۢ وَمَقَامٍۢ كَرِيمٍۢ
And crops and splendid dwellings,
27. وَنَعْمَةٍۢ كَانُوا۟ فِيهَا فَـٰكِهِينَ
And comforts in which they used to take delight!
28. كَذَٰلِكَ ۖ وَأَوْرَثْنَـٰهَا قَوْمًا ءَاخَرِينَ
So it was. And We caused another people to inherit them.
29. فَمَا بَكَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ وَٱلْأَرْضُ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُنظَرِينَ
Neither the heaven nor the earth wept for them, nor were they given a reprieve.
30. وَلَقَدْ نَجَّيْنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ مِنَ ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلْمُهِينِ
And We certainly delivered the Children of Israel from the humiliating punishment,
31. مِن فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَالِيًۭا مِّنَ ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ
From Pharaoh—he was truly a tyrant and transgressor.
32. وَلَقَدِ ٱخْتَرْنَـٰهُمْ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ عَلَى ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
And We certainly chose them knowingly above all peoples \[of their time].
33. وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلْءَايَـٰتِ مَا فِيهِ بَلَـٰٓءٌۭ مُّبِينٌ
And We gave them signs in which there was a clear trial.
34. إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَيَقُولُونَ
Indeed, these people (of Makkah) say:
35. إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّا مَوْتَتُنَا ٱلْأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُنشَرِينَ
“There is nothing beyond our first death, and we will not be resurrected.”
36. فَأْتُوا۟ بِـَٔابَآئِنَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ
“Then bring back our forefathers, if you are truthful!”
37. أَهُمْ خَيْرٌ أَمْ قَوْمُ تُبَّعٍۢ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ أَهْلَكْنَـٰهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ
Are they better or the people of Tubba‘ and those before them? We destroyed them—for indeed, they were wicked.
38. وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا لَـٰعِبِينَ
We did not create the heavens and the earth and everything in between just for play.
39. مَا خَلَقْنَـٰهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
We created them only for a true purpose, but most people do not know.
40. إِنَّ يَوْمَ ٱلْفَصْلِ مِيقَـٰتُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
Surely, the Day of Judgment is the appointed time for all of them.
41. يَوْمَ لَا يُغْنِى مَوْلًى عَن مَّوْلًۭى شَيْـًۭٔا وَلَا هُمْ يُنصَرُونَ
On that Day, no close relation will avail another in the least, nor will they be helped.
42. إِلَّا مَن رَّحِمَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
Except those to whom Allah shows mercy. He alone is the Almighty, the Merciful.
43. إِنَّ شَجَرَتَ ٱلزَّقُّومِ
Indeed, the tree of Zaqqoom
44. طَعَامُ ٱلْأَثِيمِ
Will be food for the sinful.
45. كَٱلْمُهْلِ يَغْلِى فِى ٱلْبُطُونِ
Like molten brass, it will boil in their bellies,
46. كَغَلْىِ ٱلْحَمِيمِ
Like the boiling of scalding water.
47. خُذُوهُ فَٱعْتِلُوهُ إِلَىٰ سَوَآءِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
[It will be said], “Seize him and drag him into the depths of Hell.
48. ثُمَّ صُبُّوا۟ فَوْقَ رَأْسِهِۦ مِنْ عَذَابِ ٱلْحَمِيمِ
Then pour over his head the torment of boiling water.”
49. ذُقْ ۗ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْكَرِيمُ
“Taste this! You are \[so] mighty, \[so] noble!”
50. إِنَّ هَـٰذَا مَا كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَمْتَرُونَ
Indeed, this is what you used to doubt.
51. إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى مَقَامٍ أَمِينٍۢ
Indeed, the righteous will be in a secure place:
52. فِى جَنَّـٰتٍۢ وَعُيُونٍۢ
Among gardens and springs,
53. يَلْبَسُونَ مِن سُندُسٍۢ وَإِسْتَبْرَقٍۢ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَ
Dressed in fine silk and brocade, facing one another.
54. كَذَٰلِكَ وَزَوَّجْنَـٰهُم بِحُورٍ عِينٍۢ
So it will be. And We will pair them with fair-eyed maidens.
55. يَدْعُونَ فِيهَا بِكُلِّ فَـٰكِهَةٍ ءَامِنِينَ
They will call for every kind of fruit—safely.
56. لَا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا ٱلْمَوْتَ إِلَّا ٱلْمَوْتَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ ۖ وَوَقَىٰهُمْ عَذَابَ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
They will not taste death there—except the first death. And He will protect them from the punishment of Hell.
57. فَضْلًۭا مِّن رَّبِّكَ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ
As a bounty from your Lord. That is the ultimate triumph.
58. فَإِنَّمَا يَسَّرْنَـٰهُ بِلِسَانِكَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ
So We have made this \[Qur’an] easy in your language so that they may be mindful.
59. فَٱرْتَقِبْ إِنَّهُم مُّرْتَقِبُونَ

By the clear Book,

38. وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا لَـٰعِبِينَ

39. مَا خَلَقْنَـٰهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

40. إِنَّ يَوْمَ ٱلْفَصْلِ مِيقَـٰتُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

47. خُذُوهُ فَٱعْتِلُوهُ إِلَىٰ سَوَآءِ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
