Chapter 22: Surah Al-Ḥajj (سورة الحج) - Simple English Translation
Meaning: The Pilgrimage | Total Verses: 78 | Revealed In: Medinah (Madani Surah)
1. يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱتَّقُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ
O mankind, fear your Lord.
2. إِنَّ زَلْزَلَةَ ٱلسَّاعَةِ شَىْءٌ عَظِيمٌ
Indeed, the convulsion of the Hour is a terrible thing.
3. يَوْمَ تَرَوْنَهَا تَذْهَلُ كُلُّ مُرْضِعَةٍ عَمَّآ أَرْضَعَتْ
On the Day you see it, every nursing mother will be distracted from that \[child] she was nursing...
4. وَتَضَعُ كُلُّ ذَاتِ حَمْلٍ حَمْلَهَا
And every pregnant woman will abort her pregnancy...
5. وَتَرَى ٱلنَّاسَ سُكَـٰرَىٰ وَمَا هُم بِسُكَـٰرَىٰ
And you will see the people \[appearing] intoxicated while they are not intoxicated...
6. وَلَـٰكِنَّ عَذَابَ ٱللَّهِ شَدِيدٌۭ
But the punishment of Allah is severe.
7. وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يُجَـٰدِلُ فِى ٱللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍۢ
And of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge...
8. وَيَتَّبِعُ كُلَّ شَيْطَـٰنٍ مَّرِيدٍۢ
And follows every rebellious devil.
9. كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِ أَنَّهُۥ مَن تَوَلَّاهُ فَأَنَّهُۥ يُضِلُّهُ
It has been decreed for him \[the devil] that whoever turns to him – he will misguide him...
10. وَيَهْدِيهِ إِلَىٰ عَذَابِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ
And will lead him to the punishment of the Blaze.
11. يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِن كُنتُمْ فِى رَيْبٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلْبَعْثِ
O people, if you should be in doubt about the Resurrection...
12. فَإِنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰكُم مِّن تُرَابٍۢ
Then \[consider] that We created you from dust...
13. ثُمَّ مِن نُّطْفَةٍۢ ثُمَّ مِنْ عَلَقَةٍۢ ثُمَّ مِن مُّضْغَةٍۢ مُّخَلَّقَةٍۢ
Then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot, then from a lump...
14. لِّنُبَيِّنَ لَكُمْ
So that We may make \[things] clear to you.
15. وَنُقِرُّ فِى ٱلْأَرْحَامِ مَا نَشَآءُ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍۢ مُّسَمًّۭى
And We settle in the wombs whom We will for a specified term...
16. ثُمَّ نُخْرِجُكُمْ طِفْلًۭا
Then We bring you out as a child...
17. ثُمَّ لِتَبْلُغُوٓا۟ أَشُدَّكُمْ
Then \[We develop you] so that you reach your full strength.
18. وَمِنكُم مَّن يُتَوَفَّىٰ
And among you is he who is taken in death...
19. وَمِنكُم مَّن يُرَدُّ إِلَىٰٓ أَرْذَلِ ٱلْعُمُرِ
And among you is he who is returned to the most decrepit \[old] age...
20. وَتَرَى ٱلْأَرْضَ هَامِدَةًۭ
And you see the earth barren...
21. فَإِذَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْهَا ٱلْمَآءَ ٱهْتَزَّتْ وَرَبَتْ
But when We send down upon it rain, it quivers and swells...
22. وَأَنۢبَتَتْ مِن كُلِّ زَوْجٍۢ بَهِيجٍۢ
And grows \[something] of every beautiful kind.
23. ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلْحَقُّ
That is because Allah is the Truth...
24. وَأَنَّهُۥ يُحْىِ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ
And because He gives life to the dead...
25. وَأَنَّهُۥ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ قَدِيرٌۭ
And because He is over all things competent.
26. وَأَنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ ءَاتِيَةٌۭ لَّا رَيْبَ فِيهَا
And that the Hour will come – there is no doubt about it...
27. وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَبْعَثُ مَن فِى ٱلْقُبُورِ
And that Allah will resurrect those in the graves.
28. وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يُجَـٰدِلُ فِى ٱللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍۢ
And of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge...
29. ثَانِىَ عِطْفِهِۦ لِيُضِلَّ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ
Twisting his neck \[in arrogance] to mislead \[others] from the way of Allah...
30. لَهُۥ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا خِزْىٌۭ
For him in the world is disgrace...
31. وَنُذِيقُهُۥ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ عَذَابَ ٱلْحَرِيقِ
And We will make him taste on the Day of Resurrection the punishment of the burning Fire.
32. ذَٰلِكَ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاكَ
\[And it will be said], "That is for what your hands have put forth..."
33. وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَيْسَ بِظَلَّـٰمٍۢ لِّلْعَبِيدِ
And because Allah is not ever unjust to the servants.
34. وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَعْبُدُ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ حَرْفٍۢ
And among the people is he who worships Allah on an edge...
35. فَإِنْ أَصَابَهُۥ خَيْرٌ ٱطْمَأَنَّ بِهِ
If good befalls him, he is reassured by it...
36. وَإِنْ أَصَابَتْهُ فِتْنَةٌ ٱنقَلَبَ عَلَىٰ وَجْهِهِ
But if a trial strikes him, he turns on his face \[in disbelief]...
37. خَسِرَ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْخُسْرَانُ ٱلْمُبِينُ
He has lost this world and the Hereafter. That is what is the manifest loss.
38. يَدْعُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا يَضُرُّهُۥ وَمَا لَا يَنفَعُهُۥ
He invokes besides Allah that which neither harms him nor benefits him...
39. ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلضَّلَـٰلُ ٱلْبَعِيدُ
That is what is the extreme error.
40. يَدْعُوا۟ لَمَن ضَرُّهُۥٓ أَقْرَبُ مِن نَّفْعِهِۦ
He invokes one whose harm is closer than his benefit...
41. لَبِئْسَ ٱلْمَوْلَىٰ وَلَبِئْسَ ٱلْعَشِيرُ
How wretched the protector and how wretched the associate.
42. إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُدْخِلُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ جَنَّـٰتٍۢ
Indeed, Allah will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds to gardens...
43. إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَفْعَلُ مَا يُرِيدُ
Indeed, Allah does what He intends.
44. مَن كَانَ يَظُنُّ أَن لَّن يَنصُرَهُ ٱللَّهُ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ
Whoever should think that Allah will not support him \[the Prophet] in this world and the Hereafter...
45. فَلْيَمْدُدْ بِسَبَبٍ إِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ ثُمَّ لْيَقْطَعْ
Then let him extend a rope to the ceiling, then cut off \[his breath]...
46. فَلْيَنظُرْ هَلْ يُذْهِبَنَّ كَيْدُهُۥ مَا يَغِيظُ
And let him see if his plan will remove that which enrages \[him].
47. وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ ءَايَـٰتٍۢ بَيِّنَـٰتٍۢ
And thus We have sent it \[the Qur'an] down as verses of clear evidence...
48. إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَٱلَّذِينَ هَادُوا۟ وَٱلصَّـٰبِـِٔينَ وَٱلنَّصَـٰرَىٰ
Indeed, those who have believed and those who were Jews and the Sabeans and the Christians...
49. وَٱلْمَجُوسَ وَٱلَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوٓا۟
And the Magians and those who associated with Allah...
50. إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِۚ
Indeed, Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection...

1. يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱتَّقُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ

Indeed, Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection...
