Chapter 16: Surah An‑Nahl (سورة النحل) - Simple Quran Translation In English
Meaning: The Bee | Has 128 Verses | Revealed In: Mecca (Makki Surah)
The command of Allah is coming, so do not be impatient for it. Glorified and Exalted is He above what they associate with Him.
He sends down the angels with the revelation by His command to whoever He wills of His servants: “Warn that there is no god except Me, so fear Me.”
He created the heavens and the earth for a purpose. Exalted is He above what they associate with Him.
He created man from a sperm-drop, yet he becomes a clear opponent.
And the grazing livestock He created for you; in them is warmth and \[other] benefits, and from them you eat.
And for you in them is beauty when you bring them in \[for rest] and when you send them out \[to pasture].
And they carry your loads to lands you could not have reached except with difficulty to yourselves. Indeed, your Lord is Most Kind, Most Merciful.
And \[He created] horses, mules, and donkeys for you to ride and for adornment. And He creates what you do not know.
And upon Allah is the direction of the straight path, but there are ways that deviate. If He had willed, He would have guided you all.
It is He who sends down water from the sky. From it is drink and from it grows vegetation on which you pasture your cattle.
With it He causes crops to grow for you, and olives, palm trees, grapevines, and every kind of fruit. Surely in this is a sign for people who reflect.
And He has subjected for you the night and day, and the sun and moon. And the stars are subjected by His command. Surely in this are signs for those who understand.
And \[He created] whatever He spread on the earth for you in varying colors. Surely in this is a sign for those who remember.
And He is the One who subjected the sea for you so that you may eat tender meat from it and extract ornaments to wear. And you see the ships sailing through it, so that you may seek His bounty and perhaps you will be grateful.
And He placed firm mountains upon the earth so it would not shake with you, and \[He made] rivers and paths so that you may find your way.
And landmarks as well—and by the stars they are guided.
Is then He who creates like one who does not create? Will you not then be mindful?
If you tried to count Allah’s blessings, you could never tally them all. Indeed, Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Allah knows what you conceal and what you reveal.
And those you invoke besides Allah create nothing, while they themselves are created.
They are dead, not alive, and they do not know when they will be resurrected.
Your God is One God. But those who do not believe in the Hereafter— their hearts are in denial, and they are arrogant.
Without a doubt, Allah knows what they conceal and what they reveal. He certainly does not love the arrogant.
And when it is said to them, “What has your Lord revealed?” They say, “Tales of the ancient.”
They will bear their burdens in full on the Day of Judgment, as well as some of the burdens of those whom they misled without knowledge. How evil indeed is what they will bear!

Re: Chapter 16: An-Nahl (The Bee)
Those before them also plotted, but Allah struck at the foundation of their structure, so the roof fell down upon them from above, and punishment came upon them from where they did not perceive.
Then on the Day of Resurrection He will disgrace them and say, “Where are My partners for whose sake you used to oppose \[the believers]?” Those who were given knowledge will say, “Surely today disgrace and evil are upon the disbelievers.”
Those whose souls the angels take while they were wronging themselves, they will offer submission \[saying], “We did no evil!” But yes—surely Allah is All-Knowing of what you used to do.
So enter the gates of Hell, to abide therein forever. What an evil residence for the arrogant!
And it will be said to those who were mindful of Allah, “What has your Lord revealed?” They will say, “That which is best.” For those who do good in this world is good, and the home of the Hereafter is even better. And how excellent is the home of the righteous!
Gardens of perpetual residence—they will enter them, with rivers flowing beneath. They will have whatever they wish therein. This is how Allah rewards the righteous.
Those whose souls the angels take in a state of purity, saying, “Peace be upon you! Enter Paradise for what you used to do.”
Are they waiting for anything but the angels to come to them or the command of your Lord to arrive? The same was done by those before them. And Allah did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves.
So the evil consequences of their deeds overtook them, and they were surrounded by what they used to ridicule.
The polytheists said, “Had Allah willed, we would not have worshipped anything besides Him—neither we nor our forefathers—nor would we have forbidden anything without His command.” The same was said by those before them. But is there any duty upon the messengers except clear delivery?
We surely sent a messenger to every nation, saying, “Worship Allah and shun false gods.” Then among them were those whom Allah guided, and among them were those upon whom error was justified. So travel through the land and see what was the end of the deniers.
Even if you are keen on guiding them, Allah does not guide those He allows to go astray, and they will have no helpers.
They swear by Allah their strongest oaths that Allah will not resurrect those who die. But yes—resurrection is a true promise upon Him, though most of mankind do not know.
So that He may clarify to them what they differed about, and so the disbelievers may know they were truly liars.
Our only Word to a thing, when We intend it, is that We say to it, “Be!”—and it is.
And those who emigrated for the sake of Allah after being wronged, We will surely settle them in this world in a good place. But the reward of the Hereafter is even greater, if only they knew.
They are the ones who are patient and put their trust in their Lord.
We did not send before you \[O Prophet] except men to whom We revealed—so ask the people of the Reminder if you do not know.
\[We sent them] with clear proofs and divine books. And We revealed to you the Reminder, so you may explain to people what was sent down to them, and so they may reflect.
Do those who plot evil feel secure that Allah will not cause the earth to swallow them, or that the punishment will not come upon them from where they do not perceive?
Or that He will not seize them while they go to and fro, so they cannot escape?
Or that He will not seize them gradually? But surely your Lord is Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.
Have they not seen how the things Allah created cast their shadows right and left, prostrating to Allah in humility?
To Allah prostrates whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth of living creatures, and the angels also, and they are not arrogant.
They fear their Lord above them and do as they are commanded.

Re: Chapter 16: An-Nahl (The Bee)
And Allah has said, “Do not take two gods. He is only One God, so fear Me alone.”
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth, and to Him alone is devotion due forever. Will you then fear anyone other than Allah?
And whatever of blessings you have—it is from Allah. Then when harm touches you, to Him you cry for help.
But when He removes the harm from you, behold! a group of you associates others with their Lord.
So let them deny what We have given them. Enjoy yourselves, but soon you will know.
And they assign a share of what We have provided for them to those they do not know. By Allah, you will surely be questioned about what you used to fabricate.
And they attribute daughters to Allah—glory be to Him!—while they desire only sons for themselves.
When one of them is given the news of a female \[child], his face darkens, and he is filled with grief.
He hides himself from the people because of the bad news he has received. Should he keep it in disgrace or bury it in the ground? Unquestionably, evil is what they decide.
Those who do not believe in the Hereafter have evil qualities, but to Allah belongs the highest attribute. And He is the Almighty, All-Wise.
If Allah were to punish people \[immediately] for their wrongdoing, He would not leave a single living creature on the earth. But He delays them for an appointed term. When their time comes, they cannot delay it for a moment, nor can they advance it.
They attribute to Allah what they themselves dislike, and their tongues falsely claim the best for themselves. Without doubt, the Fire awaits them, and they will be abandoned therein.
By Allah! We certainly sent messengers to nations before you, but Satan made their deeds appealing to them. Today he is their ally, and for them is a painful punishment.
We have not revealed the Book to you except so that you may clarify for them what they differed about, and as guidance and mercy for those who believe.
And Allah sends down rain from the sky, reviving the earth after its death. Surely in this is a sign for people who listen.
And surely for you in the cattle is a lesson: We give you to drink from what is in their bellies—between digested matter and blood—pure milk, palatable to the drinkers.
And from the fruits of date-palms and grapes you derive intoxicants and good provision. Surely in this is a sign for people who reason.
And your Lord inspired the bee: “Make your homes in the mountains, trees, and in what people construct.”
Then eat from all kinds of fruit and follow the ways made easy for you by your Lord. From their bellies comes a drink of varying colors, in which there is healing for people. Surely in this is a sign for those who reflect.
And Allah created you, then He will take your souls. And some of you are left to reach the most feeble age so that they may know nothing after having knowledge. Surely, Allah is All-Knowing, Most Capable.
71.
And Allah has favored some of you over others in provision. But those who were favored would not hand over their provision to those whom their right hands possess so they would be equal to them therein. Then is it the favor of Allah they reject?
72.
And Allah has made for you from yourselves mates and has made for you from your mates sons and grandchildren and has provided for you from the good things. Then in falsehood do they believe and in the favor of Allah they disbelieve?
73.
And they worship besides Allah that which does not possess for them \[the power of] provision from the heavens and the earth at all, and they are unable.
74.
So do not assert similarities to Allah. Indeed, Allah knows and you do not know.
75.
Allah presents an example: a slave owned and unable to do a thing and he to whom We have provided from Us good provision, so he spends from it secretly and publicly. Can they be equal? Praise be to Allah! But most of them do not know.
And Allah has said, “Do not take two gods. He is only One God, so fear Me alone.”
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth, and to Him alone is devotion due forever. Will you then fear anyone other than Allah?

But when He removes the harm from you, behold! a group of you associates others with their Lord.
So let them deny what We have given them. Enjoy yourselves, but soon you will know.

And they attribute daughters to Allah—glory be to Him!—while they desire only sons for themselves.

He hides himself from the people because of the bad news he has received. Should he keep it in disgrace or bury it in the ground? Unquestionably, evil is what they decide.

They attribute to Allah what they themselves dislike, and their tongues falsely claim the best for themselves. Without doubt, the Fire awaits them, and they will be abandoned therein.

Re: Chapter 16: An-Nahl (The Bee)
76.
And Allah presents an example of two men: one of them dumb, unable to do a thing while he is a burden to his guardian. Wherever he directs him, he brings no good. Is he equal to one who commands justice while he is on a straight path?
77.
And to Allah belongs the unseen \[aspects] of the heavens and the earth. And the matter of the Hour is not but as a twinkling of the eye or even nearer. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
78.
And Allah brought you out from the wombs of your mothers not knowing a thing, and He made for you hearing and vision and hearts that you might give thanks.
79.
Do they not see the birds controlled in the atmosphere of the sky? None holds them up except Allah. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who believe.
80.
And Allah has made for you from your homes a place of rest and made for you from the hides of the animals tents which you find light on your day of travel and your day of encampment; and from their wool, fur and hair, \[He provided] furnishings and goods for \[a time of] enjoyment.
And Allah has made for you shade from what He created, and He made for you shelters in the mountains, and made garments to protect you from the heat, and garments to protect you during battle. Thus does He complete His favor upon you so that you may submit (to Him).
But if they turn away, your duty is only to convey the message clearly.
They recognize the favors of Allah, but then they deny them, and most of them are disbelievers.
And \[consider] the Day We will raise from every nation a witness. Then the disbelievers will not be permitted to make excuses, nor will they be allowed to appease \[Allah].
And when the wrongdoers see the punishment, it will not be lightened for them, nor will they be granted any delay.
And when those who associated others with Allah see their partners, they will say, “Our Lord! These are our partners whom we used to call upon besides You.” But they will throw back at them the statement, “You are surely liars!”
On that Day, they will offer submission to Allah, and whatever they used to fabricate will be of no benefit to them.
Those who disbelieved and hindered \[others] from the path of Allah—We will add punishment upon punishment for them because they used to spread corruption.
And \[consider] the Day We will raise in every nation a witness against them from among themselves, and We will bring you, \[O Prophet], as a witness over these. And We have revealed to you the Book as an explanation for all things, and a guide, and a mercy, and glad tidings for those who submit.
Indeed, Allah commands justice, kindness, and giving to relatives, and forbids immorality, bad conduct, and oppression. He admonishes you so that you may take heed.
Fulfill the covenant of Allah when you make an agreement, and do not break oaths after confirming them, while you have made Allah a witness over you. Indeed, Allah knows what you do.
And do not be like the woman who untwisted her spun thread after it was strong, making your oaths a means of deception between you just because one community is more numerous than another. Allah only tests you through this. And on the Day of Judgment, He will certainly clarify that wherein you used to differ.
If Allah had willed, He could have made you one nation. But He lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And you will surely be questioned about what you used to do.
And do not use your oaths deceitfully among yourselves, lest a foot slip after being firmly planted, and you taste the evil consequences for having hindered others from Allah’s path. And you will suffer a terrible punishment.
And do not trade the covenant of Allah for a small price. What is with Allah is better for you, if only you knew.
What is with you will perish, but what is with Allah is everlasting. And We will certainly reward those who are patient according to the best of what they used to do.
Whoever does righteousness—whether male or female—while being a believer, We will surely grant them a good life, and We will reward them according to the best of what they used to do.
So when you recite the Qur’an, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed.
Indeed, Satan has no authority over those who believe and rely on their Lord.
His authority is only over those who take him as an ally and those who associate others with Allah.

79.

80.

Those who disbelieved and hindered \[others] from the path of Allah—We will add punishment upon punishment for them because they used to spread corruption.

Re: Chapter 16: An-Nahl (The Bee)
And when We substitute a verse in place of another—and Allah knows best what He reveals—they say, “You are only a fabricator.” But most of them do not know.
Say, “The Holy Spirit has brought it down from your Lord with truth to reassure those who believe, and as guidance and good news for the Muslims.”
We certainly know that they say, “It is only a human being who teaches him.” The tongue of the one they refer to is foreign, but this \[Qur’an] is in clear Arabic.
Indeed, those who do not believe in the signs of Allah—Allah will not guide them, and for them is a painful punishment.
Only those who do not believe in the signs of Allah invent lies, and it is they who are the true liars.
Whoever disbelieves in Allah after having believed—except for one who is forced \[to recant] while his heart remains firm in faith—but whoever willingly opens their heart to disbelief, upon them is the wrath of Allah, and for them is a great punishment.
That is because they preferred the life of this world over the Hereafter, and because Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.
They are the ones upon whose hearts, hearing, and sight Allah has set a seal. And it is they who are heedless.
No doubt, they will be the losers in the Hereafter.
Then surely your Lord—to those who emigrated after being persecuted, then fought and remained patient—indeed, your Lord after all that is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
\[Consider] the Day when every soul will come pleading for itself, and every soul will be paid in full for what it did, and none will be wronged.
And Allah sets forth the example of a town that was secure and at ease, its provision coming to it abundantly from every place. But it denied the favors of Allah, so Allah made it taste the garb of hunger and fear for what they had done.
And indeed, a messenger from among them came to them, but they denied him, so punishment overtook them while they were wrongdoers.
So eat of the lawful and good things which Allah has provided for you, and be grateful for the blessings of Allah, if it is truly Him that you worship.
He has only forbidden you carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. But if one is compelled without desire or transgression—then indeed, Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
And do not falsely say with your tongues, “This is lawful and that is unlawful,” to fabricate lies against Allah. Indeed, those who fabricate lies against Allah will never succeed.
It is only a brief enjoyment, but they will have a painful punishment.
And to those who were Jews, We forbade what We told you before. We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves.
Then surely your Lord—to those who did wrong out of ignorance, then repented and reformed—indeed, your Lord after that is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Indeed, Abraham was a nation \[unto himself], devoutly obedient to Allah, upright, and he was not of the polytheists.
Thankful for His favors. He chose him and guided him to a straight path.
We gave him good in this world, and in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous.
Then We revealed to you \[O Prophet], “Follow the religion of Abraham, upright, and he was not of the polytheists.”
The Sabbath was only made obligatory for those who differed about it. And surely your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning their differences.
Call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good advice, and argue with them in the best manner. Surely your Lord knows best who has strayed from His way, and He knows best who is guided.
And if you retaliate, then retaliate with an equivalent of what you were afflicted with. But if you are patient—it is certainly best for those who are patient.
Be patient, and your patience is only through Allah. Do not grieve over them, and do not be distressed by what they plot.
Surely Allah is with those who fear Him and those who do good.

And do not falsely say with your tongues, “This is lawful and that is unlawful,” to fabricate lies against Allah. Indeed, those who fabricate lies against Allah will never succeed.
