Chapter 15: Surah Al-Hijr (سورة الحجر) - Simple English Translation of Quran
Meaning: The Rocky Tract | Has 99 Verses | Revealed In: Mecca (Makki Surah)



1. الٓر ۚ تِلْكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ وَقُرْءَانٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ
Alif-Lam-Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur’an.

2. رُّبَمَا يَوَدُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ مُسْلِمِينَ
The disbelievers will wish they had been Muslims.

3. ذَرْهُمْ يَأْكُلُوا۟ وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ وَيُلْهِهِمُ ٱلْأَمَلُ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ
Leave them to eat and enjoy themselves and let false hope distract them. They will soon come to know.

4. وَمَآ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌۭ مَّعْلُومٌۭ
We did not destroy a city without it having a set time.

5. مَّا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَ
No nation can advance its time, nor delay it.

6. وَقَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِى نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌۭ
And they said, “O you upon whom the Reminder has been sent down, you are indeed mad!”

7. لَّوْ مَا تَأْتِينَا بِٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ
Why do you not bring us the angels, if you are truthful?

8. مَا نُنَزِّلُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ وَمَا كَانُوٓا۟ إِذًۭا مُّنتَظَرِينَ
We do not send down the angels except with truth; and then the disbelievers would not be reprieved.

9. إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا ٱلذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Reminder (Qur’an), and indeed, We will be its guardian.

10. وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ فِى شِيَعِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
We had certainly sent messengers before you among the former peoples.

11. وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ
No messenger came to them but they used to mock him.

12. كَذَٰلِكَ نَسْلُكُهُۥ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
This is how We insert it into the hearts of the wicked.

13. لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ ۖ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
They do not believe in it, though the ways of earlier peoples have already passed.

14. وَلَوْ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَابًۭا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَظَلُّوا۟ فِيهِ يَعْرُجُونَ
Even if We opened a gate into the heaven for them, and they were to ascend through it,

15. لَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ أَبْصَـٰرُنَا ۖ بَلْ نَحْنُ قَوْمٌۭ مَّسْحُورُونَ
They would still say, “Our eyes have been dazzled! No, we are a people bewitched.”

16. وَلَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ بُرُوجًۭا وَزَيَّنَّـٰهَا لِلنَّـٰظِرِينَ
Indeed, We have placed constellations in the sky and adorned it for the observers.

17. وَحَفِظْنَـٰهَا مِن كُلِّ شَيْطَـٰنٍۢ رَّجِيمٍ
And We protected it from every accursed devil.

18. إِلَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَرَقَ ٱلسَّمْعَ فَأَتْبَعَهُۥ شِهَابٌۭ مُّبِينٌۭ
Except one who steals a hearing, and a clear blazing flame chases him.

19. وَٱلْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَـٰهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ وَأَنبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍۭ مَّوْزُونٍۢ
And We spread out the earth and placed firm mountains in it, and We grew in it everything in balance.

20. وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَـٰيِشَ وَمَن لَّسْتُمْ لَهُۥ بِرَٰزِقِينَ
And We made livelihoods for you in it, and also for those you do not provide for.

21. وَإِن مِّن شَىْءٍ إِلَّا عِندَنَا خَزَآئِنُهُۥ ۖ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِقَدَرٍۢ مَّعْلُومٍۢ
There is nothing but that its treasures are with Us. But We do not send it down except in a known measure.

22. وَأَرْسَلْنَا ٱلرِّيَـٰحَ لَوَٰقِحَ فَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءًۭ فَأَسْقَيْنَـٰكُمُوهُ وَمَآ أَنتُمْ لَهُۥ بِخَـٰزِنِينَ
And We send the winds fertilizing \[the clouds], then We send down water from the sky, and We give it to you to drink—and you are not the ones who store it.

23. وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ نُحْيِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحْنُ ٱلْوَٰرِثُونَ
And indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritor.

24. وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا ٱلْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا ٱلْمُسْتَـْٔخِرِينَ
And We certainly know those who came before you, and We certainly know those who will come after.

25. وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌۭ
And indeed, it is your Lord who will gather them. Surely, He is All-Wise, All-Knowing.

26. وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِن صَلْصَـٰلٍۢ مِّنْ حَمَإٍۢ مَّسْنُونٍۢ
And We certainly created man from clay of molded mud.

27. وَٱلْجَآنَّ خَلَقْنَـٰهُ مِن قَبْلُ مِن نَّارِ ٱلسَّمُومِ
And the jinn We created before from scorching fire.

28. وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى خَـٰلِقٌۭ بَشَرًۭا مِّن صَلْصَـٰلٍۢ مِّنْ حَمَإٍۢ مَّسْنُونٍۢ
And \[remember] when your Lord said to the angels, “I am creating a human being from clay of molded mud.”

29. فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُۥ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِى فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَـٰجِدِينَ
So when I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, fall down in prostration to him.

30. فَسَجَدَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ
So the angels prostrated—all of them together.

31. إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰٓ أَن يَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ
Except Iblis—he refused to be among those who prostrated.

32. قَالَ يَـٰٓإِبْلِيسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ
\[Allah] said, “O Iblis, what is the matter with you that you are not among those who prostrate?”

33. قَالَ لَمْ أَكُن لِّأَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن صَلْصَـٰلٍۢ مِّنْ حَمَإٍۢ مَّسْنُونٍۢ
He said, “I am not one to prostrate to a human You created from clay of molded mud.”

34. قَالَ فَٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌۭ
\[Allah] said, “Then get out of it, for you are expelled.”

35. وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ ٱللَّعْنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
And indeed, upon you is My curse until the Day of Judgment.

36. قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ
He said, “My Lord, then delay me until the Day they are resurrected.”

37. قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ
\[Allah] said, “Then indeed, you are of those reprieved.”

38. إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْوَقْتِ ٱلْمَعْلُومِ
Until the Day of the appointed time.

39. قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَآ أَغْوَيْتَنِى لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
He said, “My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make \[evil] attractive to them on earth and I will mislead them all.”

40. إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ
Except Your chosen servants among them.

41. قَالَ هَـٰذَا صِرَٰطٌ عَلَىَّ مُسْتَقِيمٌ
\[Allah] said, “This is a straight path to Me.”

42. إِنَّ عِبَادِى لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَـٰنٌ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلْغَاوِينَ
Indeed, you will have no authority over My servants, except those who follow you from the deviators.

43. وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوْعِدُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
And indeed, Hell is the promised place for all of them.

44. لَهَا سَبْعَةُ أَبْوَٰبٍۢ ۖ لِّكُلِّ بَابٍۢ مِّنْهُمْ جُزْءٌۭ مَّقْسُومٌ
It has seven gates. For each gate is an assigned portion of them.

45. إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍۢ وَعُيُونٍ
Surely, the righteous will be in gardens and springs.

46. ٱدْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَـٰمٍ ءَامِنِينَ
\[It will be said], “Enter it in peace, secure.”

47. وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِى صُدُورِهِم مِّنْ غِلٍّ إِخْوَانًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍۢ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَ
We will remove whatever is in their hearts of resentment. \[So they will be] brothers, on thrones facing one another.

48. لَا يَمَسُّهُمْ فِيهَا نَصَبٌۭ وَمَا هُم مِّنْهَا بِمُخْرَجِينَ
No fatigue will touch them therein, nor will they be removed from it.

49. نَبِّئْ عِبَادِىٓ أَنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
Tell My servants that I am indeed the All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

50. وَأَنَّ عَذَابِى هُوَ ٱلْعَذَابُ ٱلْأَلِيمُ
And that My punishment is indeed the most painful punishment.

51. وَنَبِّئْهُمْ عَنْ ضَيْفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ
And tell them about the guests of Abraham.

52. إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَـٰمًۭا ۖ قَالَ إِنَّا مِنكُمْ وَجِلُونَ
When they entered upon him and said, “Peace,” he replied, “Indeed, we are afraid of you.”

53. قَالُوا۟ لَا تَوْجَلْ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَـٰمٍ عَلِيمٍۢ
They said, “Do not be afraid. We give you good news of a knowledgeable boy.”

54. قَالَ أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِى عَلَىٰٓ أَن مَّسَّنِىَ ٱلْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ
He said, “Do you give me good news when old age has come upon me? So what good news do you bring?”

55. قَالُوا۟ بَشَّرْنَـٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْقَـٰنِطِينَ
They said, “We give you good news in truth, so do not be of the despairing.”

56. قَالَ وَمَن يَقْنَطُ مِن رَّحْمَةِ رَبِّهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ
He said, “And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except those who are astray?”

57. قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ
He said, “So what is your mission, O messengers?”

58. قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍۢ مُّجْرِمِينَ
They said, “Indeed, we have been sent to a criminal people.”

59. إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنجُّوهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
Except for the family of Lot—indeed, We will save them all.

60. إِلَّا ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ قَدَّرْنَآ إِنَّهَا لَمِنَ ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ
Except his wife—We have decreed that she will be of those who remain behind.

61. فَلَمَّا جَآءَ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ
So when the messengers came to the family of Lot,

62. قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌۭ مُّنكَرُونَ
He said, “Indeed, you are a people unknown \[to me].”

63. قَالُوا۟ بَلْ جِئْنَـٰكَ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَ
They said, “But we have come to you with what they used to doubt.”

64. وَأَتَيْنَـٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَإِنَّا لَصَـٰدِقُونَ
And we have brought you the truth, and indeed, we are truthful.

65. فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱتَّبِعْ أَدْبَـٰرَهُمْ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنكُمْ أَحَدٌۭ وَٱمْضُوا۟ حَيْثُ تُؤْمَرُونَ
So leave with your family in a part of the night and follow behind them, and let none among you look back, and go where you are commanded.

66. وَقَضَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْأَمْرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ مَقْطُوعٌۭ مُّصْبِحِينَ
And We conveyed to him the decree that the last remnants of those people would be eliminated by morning.

67. وَجَآءَ أَهْلُ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ
And the people of the city came rejoicing.

68. قَالَ إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ ضَيْفِى فَلَا تَفْضَحُونِ
\[Lot] said, “Indeed, these are my guests, so do not disgrace me.”

69. وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُخْزُونِ
And fear Allah and do not shame me.

70. قَالُوٓا۟ أَوَلَمْ نَنْهَكَ عَنِ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
They said, “Did we not forbid you from \[protecting] people?”

71. قَالَ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ بَنَاتِىٓ إِن كُنتُمْ فَـٰعِلِينَ
He said, “Here are my daughters, if you must act \[so].”

72. لَعَمْرُكَ إِنَّهُمْ لَفِى سَكْرَتِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ
By your life! They were blindly wandering in their intoxication.

73. فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُشْرِقِينَ
Then the blast overtook them at sunrise.

74. فَجَعَلْنَا عَـٰلِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةًۭ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ
And We turned it (the town) upside down and rained upon them stones of baked clay.

75. إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَـٰتٍۢ لِّلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ
Surely in this are signs for those who discern.

76. وَإِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِيلٍۢ مُّقِيمٍ
And indeed, it is on a well-traveled road.

77. إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Indeed, in that is a sign for the believers.

78. وَإِن كَانَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْأَيْكَةِ لَظَـٰلِمِينَ
And the companions of the forest (Aykah) were certainly wrongdoers.

79. فَٱنتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ ۖ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَبِإِمَامٍۢ مُّبِينٍۢ
So We took retribution from them. And indeed, both cities are clearly visible \[as a warning].

80. وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْحِجْرِ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
And surely, the people of Al-Hijr denied the messengers.


81. وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمْ ءَايَـٰتِنَا فَكَانُوا۟ عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَ
We gave them Our signs, but they turned away from them.

82. وَكَانُوا۟ يَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا ءَامِنِينَ
And they used to carve out homes from the mountains, feeling secure.

83. فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُصْبِحِينَ
But the blast seized them in the early morning.

84. فَمَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ
And what they used to earn did not benefit them.

85. وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَءَاتِيَةٌۭ ۖ فَٱصْفَحِ ٱلصَّفْحَ ٱلْجَمِيلَ
We did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth. And the Hour is certainly coming, so bear with gracious patience.

86. إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ ٱلْخَلَّـٰقُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ
Indeed, your Lord is the Supreme Creator, the All-Knowing.

87. وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَـٰكَ سَبْعًۭا مِّنَ ٱلْمَثَانِى وَٱلْقُرْءَانَ ٱلْعَظِيمَ
And We have certainly given you the seven oft-repeated verses and the glorious Qur’an.

88. لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِۦٓ أَزْوَٰجًۭا مِّنْهُمْ وَلَا تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ وَٱخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Do not extend your eyes toward what We have given some classes of them to enjoy, and do not grieve over them. And be kind and humble to the believers.

89. وَقُلْ إِنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلنَّذِيرُ ٱلْمُبِينُ
And say, “Indeed, I am the clear warner.”

90. كَمَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَى ٱلْمُقْتَسِمِينَ
As We had sent down \[punishment] on those who divided \[the Scripture],

91. ٱلَّذِينَ جَعَلُوا۟ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ عِضِينَ
Those who made the Qur’an into parts \[dividing or disbelieving in portions].

92. فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْـَٔلَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
So by your Lord, We will surely question them all,

93. عَمَّا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ
About what they used to do.

94. فَٱصْدَعْ بِمَا تُؤْمَرُ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ
So proclaim what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists.

95. إِنَّا كَفَيْنَـٰكَ ٱلْمُسْتَهْزِءِينَ
Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers.

96. ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْعَلُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ ۚ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ
Those who set up another god with Allah—they will soon know.

97. وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدْرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ
We certainly know that your heart is distressed by what they say.

98. فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ
So glorify the praises of your Lord and be of those who prostrate.

99. وَٱعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَكَ ٱلْيَقِينُ
And worship your Lord until certainty (death) comes to you.
