Respecting Non-Muslims is Respecting the Creation of Allah

Post by muslimsforum Verified »

You do not disrespect others (religion), You disrespect the Creation of Allah

ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ

In our interactions with people of different backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures, it's important to remember a powerful principle rooted in our deen:

"When you disrespect others, you are not merely attacking their religion or ideas — you are disrespecting the creation of Allah."

Each and every human being, regardless of their beliefs or deeds, is a creation of Allah (SWT). While we may disagree with beliefs or practices, Islam teaches us to uphold justice, dignity, and compassion toward all of humanity.

What the Quran Says
“And We have certainly honored the children of Adam…” — Surah Al-Isra (17:70)
This verse makes it clear: every human has inherent dignity — not just Muslims.
“Do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.” — Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:8)
Even when we feel wronged or disagree strongly, we are commanded to remain just and respectful.

The Sunnah of Our Prophet ﷺ

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ showed immense respect and mercy to all — even to those who rejected him, mocked him, and opposed his mission. He never insulted their gods, cultures, or people.

When the Quraysh persecuted him, he responded with patience. When a Jewish funeral passed by, he stood up out of respect. When a Christian delegation came to Masjid Al-Nabawi, he allowed them to pray according to their faith.

References:

1. When the Quraysh persecuted him, he responded with patience

2. When a Jewish funeral passed by, he stood up out of respect

Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1312
Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah: "A funeral procession passed in front of us and the Prophet ﷺ stood up and we too stood up. We said, ‘O Allah's Messenger! This is the funeral procession of a Jew.’ He said, ‘Whenever you see a funeral procession, you should stand up.’”

This shows the Prophet ﷺ respected the dignity of all human beings, regardless of their faith.

3. When a Christian delegation came to Masjid Al-Nabawi, he allowed them to pray according to their faith

Source: Ibn Ishaq’s Seerah / Al-Bidayah wa’l-Nihayah (by Ibn Kathir)
A delegation of Christians from Najran visited the Prophet ﷺ in Madinah. When it came time for their prayer, they turned toward the East and began to pray inside Masjid al-Nabawi. Some companions objected, but the Prophet ﷺ allowed them to complete their prayer.

This illustrates his commitment to religious tolerance and hospitality.

These examples from authentic sources reflect the noble character of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in dealing with people of other faiths — with patience, dignity, and mutual respect. These aren’t just stories; they are living examples for us to emulate today, especially in interfaith dialogue and community interactions. This is the standard of character we must aim for.

Disrespect in Today’s World

Unfortunately, in today’s online world, it's easy to fall into mockery, name-calling, and religious hate speech, especially in debates. But this behavior does not reflect Islamic values.

Insulting others' religion or identity doesn’t make us righteous — it harms dawah efforts and pushes people further away from the truth.

How Should Muslims Respond?

(a) Disagree respectfully without mockery or arrogance
(b) Speak with wisdom and good character
(c) Remember: Guidance is in Allah’s hands – your duty is to deliver the message with hikmah (wisdom)

Let’s be ambassadors of mercy, not just messengers of truth.

May Allah guide us to honor His creation and embody the best of manners, just like His final Messenger ﷺ.
