Chapter 68: Surah Al-Qalam (سورة القلم)
Meaning: The Pen | Verses: 52 | Revealed In: Mecca (Makki Surah)

Significance of Surah Al-Qalam:
Surah Al-Qalam highlights the noble character of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and strongly rebukes those who accuse him of madness. It also gives the example of a people who lost everything due to their greed and refusal to give charity. The chapter emphasizes patience, moral integrity, and unwavering faith in the face of disbelief and opposition.

Nun. By the pen and what they write,

You ˹O Prophet˺ are not, by the grace of your Lord, insane.

And you will certainly have a never-ending reward.

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

So you will see, and they will see,

Which of you is the afflicted one.

Indeed, your Lord knows best who has strayed from His path, and He knows best who is rightly guided.

So do not obey the deniers.

They wish that you would compromise, so they would compromise.

And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer,

A slanderer, going about with malicious gossip—

A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,

Cruel, and moreover an illegitimate pretender.

Because he is a man of wealth and children?

When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “Legends of the former peoples.”

We will brand him on the snout.

Indeed, We have tested them as We tested the owners of the garden,

When they swore to pluck its fruit in the morning,

And made no exception.

So there came upon it a calamity from your Lord while they were asleep,

And it became as though reaped.

Then they called one another at morning,

[Saying], “Go early to your crop if you wish to harvest.”

So they went off, whispering to one another,

[Thinking], “Let no poor person enter it today upon you.”

And they went early in determination, assuming they had power.

But when they saw it, they said, “Indeed, we are lost.”

Rather, we have been deprived.”

The most moderate of them said, “Did I not say to you, ‘Why do you not glorify Allah?’”

They said, “Glory be to our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers.”

Then they turned to one another, blaming each other.

They said, “Woe to us! Indeed, we were transgressors.

Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us \[one] better than it. Indeed, we are turning to our Lord with hope.”

Such is the punishment \[of this world]. But the punishment of the Hereafter is greater—if only they knew.

Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord are Gardens of Bliss.

Should We then treat the obedient like the wicked?

What is \[the matter] with you? How do you judge?

Or do you have a scripture in which you learn

That indeed for you is whatever you choose?

Or do you have oaths binding upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge?

Ask them: which of them will guarantee that?

Or do they have partners? Then let them bring their partners, if they should be truthful.

The Day the shin will be uncovered and they will be invited to prostration but will not be able.

Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound.

So leave Me to deal with whoever denies this message. We will gradually lead them to ruin from where they do not know.

And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.

Or do you ask them for a payment, so they are burdened by debt?

So be patient for the decision of your Lord and do not be like the companion of the fish (Yunus) when he cried out while he was distressed.

Had not a favor from his Lord overtaken him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was to be blamed.

But his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.

And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message, and they say, “Indeed, he is mad.”

But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.
