Meaning: The Prohibition | Verses: 12 | Revealed in: Medina (Madani Surah)

O Prophet, why do you prohibit \[yourself from] what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
A report has come to you about what was revealed to Maryam—truthfully. So rejoice in that which has reached you, returning those who believe to remembrance. Why, upon \[this], did they avert \[the Prophet] from what Allah had made lawful for him, seeking to please their hearts?
And when the Prophet confided to one of his wives something—then when she informed \[another] of it, and Allah disclosed it to him, he made known part of it and ignored a part. And when he informed her about it, she said, “Who told you this?” He said, “I was told by the Knowledgeable, the Aware.”
If you \[wives] should revert to righteousness, \[it is better]; but if you conceal \[what was said]—then indeed Allah is Forgiving and Knowing. And I do not intend to reveal anything about what he concealed, and I do not intend to punish you for what he concealed. So return to him \[in repentance], \[O wives], that you might be rewarded or he might accept reparation from you. And Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
Perhaps your Lord, if He wills, will give you much, and if you turn away, \[know that] I have conveyed to you the message of my Lord. And Allah does not overlook \[what you do].
O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do? Great is hatred in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do.
There has certainly been for you a good example in Ibrahim and those with him when they said to their people, “Indeed, we disassociate ourselves from you and from whatever you worship
Except the One who created us; and to Him we will return.”
And who is more righteous than one who submits himself to Allah while he is a doer of good and follows the way of Abraham, inclining toward truth? And Allah took Abraham as an intimate friend.
O Prophet, when you \[Muslim men] intend to divorce your wives, then do so at a time when their prescribed waiting period can be completed, and fear Allah, your Lord.
Let a woman not conceal her garment that she should cover herself with it. And she may remain in her home—equality except in exception. The limits \[prescribed] by Allah. And whoever opposes the commandments of Allah has wronged his soul. Do you not know that Allah could create after it another thing?
Indeed, they \[the wives] are close to their husbands in their matters except in outstanding situations. These are Allah’s limits. And whoever disobeys Allah in this, has indeed transgressed.
