Meaning: The Star | Has 62 Verses | Revealed In: Mecca (Makki Surah)
1. وَٱلنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ
By the star when it descends,
2. مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ
Your companion \[Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred,
3. وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ
Nor does he speak from \[his own] desire.
4. إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌۭ يُوحَىٰ
It is nothing but a revelation sent down \[to him].
5. عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰ
Taught to him by one intense in strength—
6. ذُو مِرَّةٍۢ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ
One of soundness. And he rose to \[his] true form,
7. وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ
While he was in the highest part of the horizon.
8. ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ
Then he approached and came closer,
9. فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ
And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.
10. فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِۦ مَآ أَوْحَىٰ
And he revealed to His servant what He revealed.
11. مَا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ
The heart did not lie \[about] what it saw.
12. أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ
Will you then dispute with him concerning what he saw?
13. وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ
And indeed, he saw him another time,
14. عِندَ سِدْرَةِ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ
At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary—
15. عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ
Near it is the Garden of Refuge.
16. إِذْ يَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ
When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered \[it].
17. مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ
The sight \[of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress \[its limit].
18. لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ
He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.
19. أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱللَّـٰتَ وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ
So have you considered al-Lāt and al-‘Uzzā?
20. وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ
And Manāt, the third—the other one?
21. أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ
Are you to have the males and He the females?
22. تِلْكَ إِذًۭا قِسْمَةٌۭ ضِيزَىٰٓ
That, then, is an unfair division.
23. إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌۭ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم
They are nothing but \[mere] names you have named—you and your forefathers—
مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ
For which Allah has sent down no authority.
إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ
They follow nothing but conjecture and personal desires.
وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ
While there has already come to them guidance from their Lord.
24. أَمْ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ
Or shall man have whatever he wishes?
25. فَلِلَّـهِ ٱلْءَاخِرَةُ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ
Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first \[life].
26. وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٍۢ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ
And how many angels are in the heavens
لَا تُغْنِى شَفَـٰعَتُهُمْ شَيْـًۭٔا إِلَّآ مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن يَأْذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرْضَىٰٓ
whose intercession will not benefit at all except after Allah has permitted \[it] to whom He wills and approves.
27. إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْءَاخِرَةِ
Indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter
لَيُسَمُّونَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ ٱلْأُنثَىٰ
name the angels with female names,
28. وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ
But they have no knowledge thereof.
إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ ۖ
They follow nothing but assumptions,
وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ شَيْـًۭٔا
and indeed, assumption avails nothing against the truth.
29. فَأَعْرِضْ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكْرِنَا
So turn away from whoever turns his back on Our reminder
وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا
and desires not except the worldly life.
30. ذَٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ ۚ
That is the extent of their knowledge.
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ
Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who strays from His way,
وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهْتَدَىٰ
and He is most knowing of who is \[rightly] guided.
31. وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ
To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth,
لِيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَـٰٓءُوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟
so that He may reward those who do evil according to what they have done,
وَيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ بِٱلْحُسْنَى
and reward those who do good with the best \[reward].
32. ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَآئِرَ ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَ ۚ
Those who avoid the major sins and immoralities—except the small faults,
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ
indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness.
هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ
He knows you best when He produced you from the earth
وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌۭ فِى بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ ۖ
and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers.
فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ
So do not claim yourselves to be pure;
هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰ
He knows best who fears Him.
33. أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى تَوَلَّىٰ
Have you seen the one who turned away,
34. وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًۭا وَأَكْدَىٰٓ
And gave a little and then stopped?
35. أَعِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰٓ
Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so he sees \[what is hidden]?
36. أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِى صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰ
Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses,
37. وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلَّذِى وَفَّىٰٓ
And of Abraham, who fulfilled \[his obligations]—
38. أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌۭ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ
That no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another.
39. وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ
And that there is not for man except what he strives for—
40. وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُۥ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ
And that his effort will be seen—
41. ثُمَّ يُجْزَىٰهُ ٱلْجَزَآءَ ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ
Then he will be recompensed with the fullest reward—
42. وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ
And that to your Lord is the final return—
43. وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ
And that it is He who causes laughter and weeping—
44. وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا
And that it is He who causes death and gives life—
45. وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰ
And that He created the two mates—the male and female—
46. مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ
From a sperm-drop when it is emitted—
47. وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰ
And that upon Him is the next creation—
48. وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغْنَىٰ وَأَقْنَىٰ
And that it is He who enriches and suffices—
49. وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعْرَىٰ
And that He is the Lord of Sirius—
50. وَأَنَّهُۥٓ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا ٱلْأُولَىٰ
And that He destroyed the first \[people of] ‘Ād—
51. وَثَمُودَ فَمَآ أَبْقَىٰ
And Thamūd—and He did not spare \[them]—
52. وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍۢ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ
And the people of Noah before.
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ
Indeed, they were more unjust and more transgressing.
53. وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰ
And the overturned cities—He hurled down,
54. فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰ
And covered them with what He covered.
55. فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَـٰرَىٰ
Then which of the favors of your Lord do you dispute?
56. هَـٰذَا نَذِيرٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ
This \[Prophet] is a warner like the former warners.
57. أَزِفَتِ ٱلْءَازِفَةُ
The approaching Hour has drawn near.
58. لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ
None besides Allah can remove it.
59. أَفَمِنْ هَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَ
Do you then wonder at this statement \[the Qur’an]?
60. وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ
And you laugh and do not weep,
61. وَأَنتُمْ سَـٰمِدُونَ
While you are heedless?
62. فَٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟
So prostrate to Allah and worship Him.
Ayah 62 contains a Sajdah (prostration verse) — it is recommended to perform Sajdah (prostration) when reciting or hearing it.
