Surah Al-Masad (سورة المسد)
Meaning: The Palm Fiber / The Flame | Has 5 Verses | Revealed In: Mecca (Makki Surah)

Image

May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he!

His wealth and gains will not benefit him.

He will burn in a flaming Fire.

And his wife (too) – the carrier of firewood.

Around her neck is a rope of palm-fiber.

This Surah is a powerful warning about arrogance, disbelief, and opposition to the truth.

Who was Abu Lahab ?

Abu Lahab (real name: ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā ibn ʿAbdul Muṭṭalib) was the uncle of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, but a staunch enemy of Islam.

Key Facts about Abu Lahab:

(a) He was a paternal uncle of the Prophet ﷺ but showed hatred and opposition to the message of Islam.
(b) Along with his wife, he mocked, insulted, and harmed the Prophet ﷺ openly.
(c) Allah revealed Surah Al-Masad (Surah 111) condemning him and his wife by name — the only enemies of Islam directly mentioned in the Qur’an.

His story serves as a powerful lesson that lineage alone doesn’t save a person — only faith (iman) does.
