Meaning: Those Who Set the Ranks | Has 182 Verses | Revealed In: Mecca (Makki Surah)
1. وَالصَّافَّاتِ صَفًّا
By those \[angels] lined up in rows,
2. فَالزَّاجِرَاتِ زَجْرًا
And those who drive \[the clouds or souls] forcefully,
3. فَالتَّالِيَاتِ ذِكْرًا
And those who recite the message,
4. إِنَّ إِلَـٰهَكُمْ لَوَاحِدٌ
Indeed, your God is truly One,
5. رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ الْمَشَارِقِ
Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, and Lord of the sunrises.
6. إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا بِزِينَةٍ الْكَوَاكِبِ
Indeed, We have adorned the lowest heaven with the beauty of stars
7. وَحِفْظًا مِّن كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ مَّارِدٍ
And \[made them] protection against every rebellious devil.
8. لَا يَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى الْمَلَإِ الْأَعْلَىٰ وَيُقْذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبٍ
[So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly \[of angels] and are pelted from every side,
9. دُحُورًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ وَاصِبٌ
Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment,
10. إِلَّا مَنْ خَطِفَ الْخَطْفَةَ فَأَتْبَعَهُ شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ
Except one who snatches \[some words] by stealth, but they are pursued by a piercing flame.
11. فَاسْتَفْتِهِمْ أَهُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَم مَّنْ خَلَقْنَا ۚ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُم مِّن طِينٍ لَّازِبٍ
So ask them \[O Prophet], "Are they a stronger creation or those We created?" Indeed, We created them from sticky clay.
12. بَلْ عَجِبْتَ وَيَسْخَرُونَ
But you are amazed while they mock.
13. وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُوا لَا يَذْكُرُونَ
And when they are reminded, they pay no attention.
14. وَإِذَا رَأَوْا آيَةً يَسْتَسْخِرُونَ
And when they see a sign, they ridicule.
15. وَقَالُوا إِنْ هَـٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ
And they say, "This is nothing but clear magic.
16. أَإِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ
When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?
17. أَوَآبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ
And our forefathers as well?"
18. قُلْ نَعَمْ وَأَنتُمْ دَاخِرُونَ
Say, "Yes, and you will be rendered contemptible."
19. فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجْرَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ فَإِذَا هُمْ يَنظُرُونَ
It will be only one shout, and immediately they will be looking on.
20. وَقَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا هَـٰذَا يَوْمُ الدِّينِ
They will say, "Oh, woe to us! This is the Day of Judgment."
21. هَـٰذَا يَوْمُ الْفَصْلِ الَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِ تُكَذِّبُونَ
[They will be told], "This is the Day of Final Decision which you used to deny."
22. احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَ
[It will be said], "Gather those who did wrong, their kinds, and what they used to worship
23. مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ فَاهْدُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطِ الْجَحِيمِ
Other than Allah, and lead them to the path of Hellfire
24. وَقِفُوهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسْئُولُونَ
But stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned."
25. مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَنَاصَرُونَ
"What is \[wrong] with you that you do not help each other?"
26. بَلْ هُمُ الْيَوْمَ مُسْتَسْلِمُونَ
But they, that Day, are in surrender.
27. وَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ
And they will turn to one another, questioning each other.
28. قَالُوا إِنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ تَأْتُونَنَا عَنِ الْيَمِينِ
They will say, "Indeed, you used to come at us from the right."
29. قَالُوا بَل لَّمْ تَكُونُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ
They will say, "But you were not believers.
30. وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَيْكُم مِّن سُلْطَانٍ ۖ بَلْ كُنتُمْ قَوْمًا طَاغِينَ
And we had over you no authority, but you were a transgressing people.
31. فَحَقَّ عَلَيْنَا قَوْلُ رَبِّنَا ۖ إِنَّا لَذَائِقُونَ
So the word of our Lord has come into effect upon us; indeed, we will taste \[the punishment].
32. فَأَغْوَيْنَاكُمْ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَاوِينَ
And we led you to deviance; indeed, we were deviators."
33. فَإِنَّهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِي الْعَذَابِ مُشْتَرِكُونَ
So indeed they, that Day, will be sharing in the punishment.
34. إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِالْمُجْرِمِينَ
Indeed, this is how We deal with the criminals.
35. إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ لَا إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ
Indeed, they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allah," were arrogant
36. وَيَقُولُونَ أَإِنَّا لَتَارِكُوا آلِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرٍ مَّجْنُونٍ
And would say, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?"
37. بَلْ جَاءَ بِالْحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
Rather, he has come with the truth and confirmed the messengers.
38. إِنَّكُمْ لَذَائِقُو الْعَذَابِ الْأَلِيمِ
Indeed, you \[disbelievers] will taste the painful punishment.
39. وَمَا تُجْزَوْنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do,
40. إِلَّا عِبَادَ اللَّهِ الْمُخْلَصِينَ
Except for the chosen servants of Allah.
41. أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ لَهُمْ رِزْقٌ مَّعْلُومٌ
Those will have a provision determined –
42. فَوَٰكِهُ ۖ وَهُم مُّكْرَمُونَ
Fruits; and they will be honored
43. فِي جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ
In gardens of pleasure
44. عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُّتَقَابِلِينَ
On thrones facing one another.
45. يُطَافُ عَلَيْهِم بِكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ
They will be circulated with a cup \[of wine] from a flowing spring,
46. بَيْضَاءَ لَذَّةٍ لِّلشَّارِبِينَ
White and delicious to the drinkers;
47. لَا فِيهَا غَوْلٌ وَلَا هُمْ عَنْهَا يُنزَفُونَ
No bad effect is there in it, nor from it will they be intoxicated.
48. وَعِندَهُمْ قَاصِرَاتُ الطَّرْفِ عِينٌ
And with them will be women limiting \[their] glances, with large, \[beautiful] eyes,
49. كَأَنَّهُنَّ بَيْضٌ مَّكْنُونٌ
As if they were delicate eggs, well protected.
