For years, Hollywood has struggled with how it portrays Muslims—especially Muslim women. The hijab, in particular, has often been reduced to a symbol of oppression or extremism. Rarely was it shown as something worn with pride, purpose, or religious conviction. But times may be changing.
In recent productions, we’re beginning to see more well-rounded Muslim characters, including hijab-wearing women portrayed in a positive and relatable light. Shows like Ms. Marvel have placed Muslim characters at the center—not as side notes or villains, but as heroes and complex individuals. Even in supporting roles, Muslim women are now shown as students, artists, professionals, and leaders—something that was almost unheard of in mainstream Western media a decade ago.
This shift has been fueled in part by Muslim creators taking charge of their own narratives. Writers, directors, and actors from Muslim backgrounds are challenging outdated stereotypes and demanding representation that reflects real-life diversity. These efforts are making space for stories that show the hijab not as a limitation, but as part of a woman’s strength, identity, and personal choice.
Still, progress is uneven. Some portrayals feel superficial, and in many cases, hijabi characters are added to check a diversity box rather than to contribute meaningfully to the story. Others still fall back on tired tropes, reinforcing more harm than good.
That said, what we’re witnessing now is a growing awareness in the industry—a recognition that Muslim stories matter, and that they deserve to be told with accuracy and respect. The question is no longer whether Muslims belong in Hollywood, but whether the industry is ready to embrace their stories in full.
As audiences, we have a role to play too—by supporting films and shows that get it right, and speaking up when they don’t.
