Signs of the Last Day in Islam – Real Events Happening Now?

Post by Fatima Verified »

The belief in the Last Day (Yawm al-Qiyamah) is a fundamental pillar of Islam. Allah and His Messenger ﷺ have given us numerous signs – both minor and major – to indicate the approach of the Hour. While the exact time is known only to Allah, Muslims are encouraged to stay alert and spiritually prepared.

Are We Witnessing the Signs Today?

Many Muslims around the world observe current events and ask: Are these the signs the Prophet ﷺ warned us about?

Several minor signs that seem to be unfolding in our time include:

1.Widespread dishonesty and loss of trust
2. Disobedience to parents becoming common
3. Loss of Knowledge through the Death of Scholars
4. Frequent natural disasters and calamities
5. Widespread immorality and shamelessness
6. Rivalry in Constructing Tall Buildings

While these signs have existed to varying degrees over the centuries, the frequency and global scale today are striking.

What About the Major Signs?

The major signs of the Last Day are far more dramatic and will unfold rapidly one after the other. These include:

1. The emergence of the Dajjal (Antichrist)
2. The return of Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him)
3. The appearance of the Mahdi
4.The descent of the smoke
5. The beast of the Earth (Dabbah)
6. The sun rising from the west
7. Three major landslides
8. A fire that gathers people for judgment

These signs have not yet occurred, but many scholars believe that the world is increasingly moving toward that stage.

Caution Against Speculation

While it’s natural to connect current events with prophecies, Islam warns against obsession with predicting the Hour. The Prophet ﷺ said:
The Hour will not come until…” and then he listed many signs, but he also made it clear that only Allah knows the exact timing-(Qur’an 31:34 – Indeed, Allah \[alone] has knowledge of the Hour…)
Our Response: Preparation Over Prediction

Rather than focusing on when the Day of Judgment will occur, Muslims are urged to focus on what we’re doing to prepare for it. This includes:

1. Strengthening our faith (iman)
2. Seeking knowledge and repentance
3. Maintaining good character and justice
4. Being active in community and dawah
5. Holding steadfast to the Qur’an and Sunnah

The signs of the Last Day are meant to be a reminder and warning, not a schedule of events. Whether the signs are unfolding in real-time or not, the real question is: Are we ready to meet our Lord? Let’s not just observe the signs — let’s act on them by drawing closer to Allah in these uncertain times.
Whoever hopes to meet their Lord should do righteous deeds and not associate anyone in the worship of their Lord= (Qur’an 18:110)
The signs of the Last Day are not merely warnings etched in scripture — they are wake-up calls meant to stir our hearts, strengthen our faith, and guide our actions. Whether we are witnessing them today or they are yet to come in full force, the real test lies in how we respond. Will we fall into fear and speculation, or rise with sincerity and readiness?

Let this not be a topic of curiosity alone, but a call to return to Allah — with renewed repentance, firmer belief, and deeper commitment to the Qur’an and Sunnah. The signs may be visible, but the opportunity to prepare is still within our grasp.

Let’s remind each other with love, strive with sincerity, and walk together toward a better akhirah.
So whoever is mindful of Allah — He will make for him a way out-(Qur’an 65:2)
